St. John’s Anglican Church
The church is often referred to as St. John’s York Mills Anglican Church. The cornerstone for St. John’s was laid on May 30, 1843
It is located at 19 Don Ridge Drive. Click here for a Google Map to St, John's York Mills.
If you are driving on Highway 401, turn south on Yonge St to York Mills Rd. Turn left, and head east on York Mills Rd. At the first flashing light, turn left at Old Yonge St, and follow it to Don Ridge Road. If you are travelling on foot, the path from Yonge St. leads directly to St. John's York Mills. The path is just north of the TTC bus depot. The nearest subway station is York Mills at the corner of Yonge and York Mills Road.
The Casavant organ was installed in 1949 as opus 1969 and comprised 27 stops, though many of the stops were saved from the previously installed 1928 Breckels and Matthews organ that came from St. John’s Presbyterian Church on Broadview Ave. . A tonal revision and addition of 16 new Casavant ranks was completed in 1968. In 1994 electronic stops were added to complement the existing pipe ranks.
Of interest is the English “barrel organ” in the gallery of the church, dating from 1847. There are five stops and no keyboard. Turning a crank pumps the wind needed for the pipes and also turns the barrel.
St. John’s Churchyard
The Churchyard is an integral part of the Corporation of St. John’s Anglican Church, York Mills which was established in 1816. The earliest headstone in the cemetery dates from the year 1831. Many of the early settlers to the area who played major roles in the development of the Village of York Mills are interred in the churchyard.
