Matthew Whitfield

Matthew Whitfield is Organist & Director of Music at St. Thomas’s Anglican Church, Huron Street in Toronto. Matthew received his musical training from York University, where he studied with Stephanie Martin, and the University of Toronto, where he received his MMus and worked with John Tuttle. While at the University of Toronto, Matthew performed in masterclasses with Canadian organists Ken Cowan and Isabelle Demers and won prizes in several National and Regional organ competitions.

As a conductor, Matthew has given performances of numerous large-scale works, including the York University production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering. Trained in both choral and orchestral conducting, Matthew is equally at home leading vocal and instrumental ensemble works, particularly from the Baroque and Modern eras.

Also a writer, Matthew is Early Music columnist for The WholeNote Magazine and also covers the Toronto pipe organ scene for both The WholeNote and the Royal Canadian College of Organists.
