Michael Bloss
Michael Bloss serves as Organist and Director of Music at the Cathedral Church of St. James' in Toronto, a diverse and vibrant program. He had previously served there as Associate Organist. Other distinguished tenures at First (Park) Congregational Church, Grand Rapids, MI and Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, Toronto round out a focus on pastoral music ministry. In over 30 years as a church musician, Michael has facilitated music in a variety of denominations and sizes of worshipping community. He is passionately committed to encouraging and animating the song of God's people in ways which bring their voice to full flowering.
Among some firsts for a Canadian (First Prize in the 1986 International Organ Competition at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Preisträger at the 1992 IX. International J.S. Bach Organ Competition held in Leipzig, Germany), he has also premiered many contemporary works. Of particular note have been special appearances with the Toronto Symphony and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir in works by Berio and, at the 1993 International Congress of Organists in Montreal. As an adjudicator he has participated in the Peel Music Festival and the Toronto and Ottawa Kiwanis Music Festivals in keyboard, vocal and choral categories.
Bloss is in demand with such organizations as the Elora Festival and Soundstreams, and has shared the stage with such notables as Kryststof Penderecki, Sir Andrew Davis, Elmer Iseler, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. His solo career has included solo venues in Europe, Japan, the US. and throughout Canada. His US. appearances have included performances at the Cadet Chapel, West Point, the Cleveland Museum of Art, St. Paul's Cathedral, Detroit and Chicago's Fourth Presbyterian Church. In addition, Mr. Bloss has been featured on CBC Radio and Television, National Public Radio and Swiss Radio. Concerts in 2005 include a return engagement at St. Paul's Cathedral in Detroit, MI, and an appearance at St. Paul's Cathedral in Buffalo, NY.
