In the autumn of 1705, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), aged twenty made the 280 mile journey from Arnstadt to Lübeck, to hear and study with the greatest organist of the day, Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707). When Bach left Arnstadt, his church elders had granted him leave for four week. However, he was gone for four months. What was Bach doing in Lübeck during those four months? Did he have lessons with Buxtehude? Did he take part in the famed, Abendsmusik concerts, a series of Advent concert, 1705 being the most famous concerts in the series. Being in Lübeck at that time of year he would most certainly have heard the chorales of Advent and Christmas. Today’s program is inspired by this journey and the colours of this organ. This is Christmas in July: Bach meets Buxtehude.
